Plot Summary
Jonathan Cooper arrives desperately at the doorstep of his friend Eve Gill, a drama student at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, claiming he is being framed for the murder of the husband of his lover, glamorous West End stage actress Charlotte Inwood. According to Jonathan, Charlotte appeared at his door wearing a blood-stained dress, begging him to return to her home and retrieve a clean one. When he arrived at the scene of the murder, he was spotted, making him the prime suspect in a crime he insists Charlotte committed. Eve believes Jonathan’s story and decides to investigate on her own, going undercover as Charlotte’s personal dresser to uncover the truth behind the killing. As Eve insinuates herself into Charlotte’s glittering theatrical world, she encounters the charming Inspector Wilfred Smith, who is investigating the case. A romantic attraction develops between Eve and Smith, dangerously complicating her amateur detective work since the man she is protecting is the inspector’s prime suspect. The deeper Eve digs into Charlotte’s life, the more she discovers that the truth may be far more twisted than what Jonathan originally told her. The theatrical world provides a perfect backdrop for Hitchcock’s exploration of deception — everyone in this story is performing a role, on stage and off, and the audience cannot be sure who is telling the truth until the shocking final revelation tears away the last mask. This classic movie is a sophisticated Hitchcock mystery that keeps the audience guessing with layers of deception, glamour, and psychological tension set against the vibrant world of London theater.
Cast & Crew
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Stars: Jane Wyman, Marlene Dietrich, Richard Todd, Michael Wilding, Alastair Sim, Sybil Thorndike, Kay Walsh, Joyce Grenfell
Jane Wyman is thoroughly engaging as Eve Gill, bringing intelligence, humor, and courage to a heroine who must act multiple roles simultaneously — drama student, amateur detective, and Charlotte’s undercover dresser. Marlene Dietrich is magnificent as Charlotte Inwood, delivering a performance of crystalline glamour that keeps the audience perpetually uncertain whether she is a grieving lover, a cold-blooded killer, or the greatest actress in London. Richard Todd brings intensity and vulnerability to the suspicious Jonathan, while Michael Wilding provides urbane charm as the Inspector who falls for Eve. Alastair Sim nearly steals the film as Eve’s eccentric father, and Joyce Grenfell provides delicious comic relief as a determined charity worker.

Historical Significance
Stage Fright is notable in Hitchcock’s filmography for its controversial use of an unreliable narrator, a bold technique that divided critics at the time but has since been recognized as brilliantly ahead of its era — a device that would later become common in sophisticated thrillers and literary fiction. The film features Marlene Dietrich at her most glamorous, performing the Cole Porter song “The Laziest Gal in Town” in a memorable musical sequence. Hitchcock assembled a remarkable cast of British theatrical talent including Alastair Sim, Sybil Thorndike (who had been a real-life RADA teacher), and Joyce Grenfell, giving the film an authentically British flavor unique among his works. Through colorization, this underappreciated Hitchcock thriller finds a wider audience who can appreciate its clever construction and exceptional performances.
