Plot Summary
Serving on a murder jury, Miss Marple (Margaret Rutherford) is the lone holdout for acquittal, stubbornly convinced by her instincts and her encyclopedic knowledge of criminal behavior that the accused man — a hapless writer charged with poisoning a woman in his boarding house — is innocent. When the rest of the jury proves immovable and the defendant is convicted, the dissatisfied Miss Marple sets out on her own to prove her instincts right by finding the real killer before an innocent man faces the gallows.
Her investigation leads to the Dobyns Repertory Theatre, a delightfully ramshackle touring company where the murdered woman had connections and where several members knew her well. Going brilliantly undercover as an aspiring actress auditioning for a role, Miss Marple joins the company — aided by her faithful companion Mr. Stringer (Stringer Davis) — and quickly discovers that the troupe is a seething nest of professional jealousy, romantic intrigue, financial desperation, and very dark secrets. The flamboyant and egotistical director Driffold Cosgood (Ron Moody) runs a chaotic production where backstage dramas are far more compelling than anything happening on stage, while individual cast members harbor grudges, debts, and hidden pasts that connect them to the murdered woman. When another cast member is killed during a performance — this time right under the bright stage lights — Miss Marple realizes that the murderer is someone within the company who will not stop until all threats are eliminated, and that her own persistent investigation has made her the next target. This classic movie combines Agatha Christie’s puzzle-box plotting with the colorful world of backstage drama.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
This colorized version of Murder Most Foul reveals the theatrical world, the backstage chaos, and the cozy English settings with warm new visual charm. The original black and white photography captured the comedic mystery atmosphere perfectly, but the professionally colorized restoration brings out the faded red velvet seats and gold-painted trim of the provincial theater, the colorful but well-worn stage costumes, the cluttered backstage areas strewn with props and makeup, and the warm tones of the English village where Miss Marple pursues her investigation with frame-by-frame precision. The theatrical setting gains particular visual richness in color, with the contrast between the bright artifice of the stage and the shadowy reality of the crimes behind the curtain adding a delightful visual dimension. Historical Significance
Murder Most Foul was the third in the series of four Miss Marple films starring Margaret Rutherford, adapted from Agatha Christie’s novel Mrs McGinty’s Dead, with Miss Marple once again replacing Hercule Poirot as the investigating detective. The film’s title comes from Shakespeare’s Hamlet — “Murder most foul, as in the best it is” — adding a fitting literary touch to the theatrical setting. Ron Moody, who had just achieved international fame as Fagin in the stage production of Oliver!, brought tremendous comic energy to his role as the vain director Cosgood, and a young Francesca Annis appeared in an early role before her rise to prominence in British television and film. Rutherford’s portrayal of Miss Marple as an energetic, physically adventurous, and irrepressibly curious amateur detective charmed audiences and became the definitive screen version of the character until Joan Hickson’s acclaimed BBC adaptations in the 1980s. The colorization enhances the theatrical setting and adds visual warmth to this beloved British mystery.
