Plot Summary

Norman Pitkin and Mr Grimsdale are council workmen mending the road outside an Army base when they come into conflict with the military. Working as road repairmen for the local council, Norman and his elderly colleague Mr Grimsdale are assigned to fix a road near a military base. Their work causes delays for military vehicles, leading to confrontations with the soldiers, particularly a sergeant who takes exception to their interference.

Shortly afterwards, they get drafted and fall into the clutches of the Sergeant they have just bested. When World War II breaks out, Norman and Mr Grimsdale are called up for military service.
