Plot Summary

Washington, D.C., 1940. The Farrelly family — wealthy, comfortable, and comfortably removed from the war raging across Europe — awaits the arrival of Sara (Bette Davis), the daughter who left America years ago to marry a European. Sara returns home with her husband Kurt Muller (Paul Lukas) and their three children, and the reunion is warm and joyful. But the Farrelly household soon discovers that Kurt is not merely the gentle, cultured engineer he appears to be.

Kurt Muller is a leader in the German underground resistance movement, a man who has spent years fighting fascism at enormous personal cost — imprisonment, torture, and the constant danger of death. He has come to America to raise money for the rescue of comrades imprisoned by the Nazis, and the family’s visit to Sara’s childhood home is a brief respite in a life defined by sacrifice and danger.
