Plot Summary
In the colorful, gas-lit Gay Nineties of 1890s New York, Lady Lou reigns as the undisputed queen of Gus Jordan’s rowdy Bowery saloon, where her sultry singing, razor-sharp wit, and magnificent diamond collection pack the house every single night. Men of every station shower her with jewels and devotion, from Russian admirers offering priceless gems to besotted politicians promising the world, but Lou keeps them all at arm’s length with devastating one-liners and a knowing smile. Her convicted lover Chick Clark rots in Sing Sing prison, growing increasingly jealous and desperate, while the smooth South American gangster Serge Stanieff circles like a predator waiting for his chance.
When the handsome, square-jawed Captain Cummings opens a Salvation Army-style mission right next door to save the fallen souls of the Bowery, Lou takes an immediate and very personal interest in this straight-laced do-gooder who seems immune to her legendary charms. She invites him up to see her sometime, and he comes — but not for the reasons she expects. Meanwhile, behind the saloon’s flashy facade of music and revelry, Gus Jordan is running a sinister criminal empire that includes counterfeiting operations, diamond smuggling, and a human trafficking ring that preys on vulnerable young women. When the naive Sally is lured into Jordan’s web and nearly destroyed, Lou’s conscience is finally stirred beneath her cynical exterior.
As various admirers compete violently for Lou’s affections, Chick Clark escapes from prison and comes looking for revenge, a jealous Russian threatens murder, and Serge’s deadly intentions are revealed, the seemingly unflappable Lady Lou must navigate gangsters, jealous rivals, and a tightening murder plot while discovering that the virtuous Captain Cummings harbors a stunning secret of his own that changes everything.

Historical Significance
She Done Him Wrong is one of the most historically significant comedies in American cinema. Based on Mae West’s own scandalous Broadway play Diamond Lil, the film was so enormously successful at the box office that it is credited with single-handedly saving Paramount Pictures from bankruptcy during the Great Depression. The film’s frank sexuality, double entendres, and West’s unapologetic attitude toward desire were so provocative that it became one of the key films that triggered the strict enforcement of the Hays Production Code in 1934, fundamentally changing Hollywood for decades. It also launched Cary Grant to genuine stardom — their pairing proved so popular that Paramount immediately reteamed them in I’m No Angel later that same year. Through professional colorization, this groundbreaking pre-Code classic reaches new audiences.
