Plot Summary
Cosmo Topper has had enough. The events of the original film β in which a pair of fun-loving ghosts transformed his repressed, routine-bound existence β have left his marriage to the formidable Mrs. Topper in ruins. Clara Topper, convinced that her husband’s increasingly erratic behavior signals either madness or infidelity, initiates divorce proceedings, and the beleaguered Cosmo escapes to the glamorous French Riviera to recuperate and reconsider his life.
For a brief moment, it appears that Topper might actually achieve the peaceful holiday he craves. The Riviera is beautiful, the hotels are elegant, and there are attractive women who find the wealthy American banker quite charming. But peace is not in the cards for Cosmo Topper β the irrepressible ghost of Marion Kerby has followed him across the Atlantic, invisible to everyone but occasionally and inconveniently visible to Cosmo.
Marion, who in death remains as vivacious, glamorous, and entertainingly irresponsible as she was in life, takes it upon herself to ensure that Cosmo’s holiday is anything but restful. She interferes with his attempts at romance, causes social embarrassments at the most elegant establishments on the CΓ΄te d’Azur, and generally transforms the dignified banker’s vacation into a series of increasingly spectacular and hilarious encounters with the supernatural.
Complicating matters further, Clara Topper arrives on the Riviera with her divorce lawyer, and the interplay between the invisible Marion, the bewildered Cosmo, and the suspicious Clara creates a magnificent comedy of errors that builds to a resolution involving ghostly intervention, romantic reconciliation, and the triumph of love β both living and spectral.
