Plot Summary

Stanlio and Ollio are two penniless travellers wandering the roads of nineteenth-century Italy, hoping to find some way to improve their miserable fortunes. Their journey takes a dramatic turn when they are robbed of their meagre savings by the notorious bandit Fra Diavolo, a charming and ruthless outlaw who disguises himself as a wealthy marquis to move freely among the aristocracy while planning his crimes.

After a disastrous attempt at becoming bandits themselves ends in predictable failure, Stanlio and Ollio find themselves pressed into service as Fra Diavolo’s reluctant accomplices. The bandit has set his sights on a magnificent collection of jewels belonging to Lady Pamela Donskoy, the wife of a wealthy but miserly English lord who is travelling through Italy. Fra Diavolo’s plan is to seduce Lady Pamela while his new henchmen create diversions and steal the jewels.
