Plot Summary
Harpo is a mute, irrepressibly kleptomaniac stagehand attached to a struggling, desperately underfunded Broadway theatrical troupe that is trying against all odds to mount a lavish musical revue with no money, no prospects, and a cast held together by nothing but blind optimism, theatrical passion, and Chico’s fast-talking improvisational genius as the troupe’s perpetually scrambling manager. When Harpo, through his compulsive inability to stop stealing anything that isn’t nailed down, inadvertently lifts a tin of sardines from a small grocery store, he has no idea that crammed inside that ordinary-looking can is a fortune in priceless Romanoff diamonds — hidden there by a gang of ruthless, sophisticated international jewel thieves led by the glamorous, ice-cold, magnificently villainous Madame Egelichi (Ilona Massey), a woman who will stop at absolutely nothing to recover her stolen treasure. As Madame Egelichi dispatches her increasingly desperate, increasingly violent thugs to tear apart the ragged theatrical troupe in search of the diamonds, the unsuspecting Harpo wanders through the mounting chaos with his characteristic sublime, blissful obliviousness, clutching the sardine tin for dear life while somehow staying one miraculous step ahead of killers who would cheerfully murder him for what he’s carrying. Chico tries desperately to keep the show financially afloat while dodging an army of creditors, suspicious detectives, and dangerous criminals who keep turning up backstage at the worst possible moments. Groucho Marx appears as the magnificently self-regarding private detective Sam Grunion, hired to track down the missing gems and providing a running commentary of deadpan wisecracks, outrageous observations, and shameless flirtation that punctuates the escalating mayhem with perfectly timed doses of verbal genius. The entire enterprise builds toward a spectacular, genuinely thrilling rooftop chase sequence in which Harpo leads the criminals on a wild, inventive, acrobatic pursuit across the towering neon advertising signs of Times Square, swinging between giant illuminated billboards in a sequence of breathtaking visual comedy. This classic movie is a fitting, hilarious, and surprisingly poignant farewell for comedy’s greatest team.
