Plot Summary

Charlie Dakin has just been released from prison after serving a long sentence for armed robbery. Hard, cynical, and utterly without scruples, he heads immediately to a remote village in the Mexican desert where he and his late partner hid the gold from their last heist before they were caught. The gold is his only interest — he intends to dig it up, take it, and disappear without a trace.

The village he finds is desperately poor, its inhabitants sick with a mysterious illness that their limited medical knowledge cannot cure. The villagers are deeply religious people who have been praying for a miracle, and when the stranger arrives asking questions about the old mine where the gold is hidden — a mine they believe is cursed — they interpret his arrival through the lens of their faith.
