Plot Summary
Deborah Chandler Clark (Ida Lupino) comes from a wealthy family that owns a successful lumber mill in a small rural community. When her father dies in what appears to be an industrial accident at the mill, Deborah inherits the business. In her grief, she turns to Selden Clark (Stephen McNally), a smooth and attentive man who has been courting her. They marry quickly — too quickly, as Deborah will soon discover.
On their honeymoon, a series of disturbing incidents reveals the truth about Selden. He is not the loving husband he pretended to be but a calculating predator who married Deborah solely to gain control of her inheritance and the profitable mill. More horrifyingly, Deborah begins to suspect that her father’s death was not an accident at all — that Selden engineered the industrial “accident” that killed him, removing the one obstacle between himself and the Chandler fortune.
When Deborah confronts Selden, he drops his charming facade and reveals his true nature — cold, ruthless, and willing to kill again to protect what he has gained. Deborah barely escapes with her life and goes on the run, adopting a false identity and hiding among strangers in a desperate attempt to stay alive long enough to find proof of Selden’s crimes.
In hiding, Deborah meets Keith Ramsey (Howard Duff), an affable and persistent man who is attracted to her and tries to break through her guarded exterior. Deborah cannot trust anyone — for all she knows, Keith could be one of Selden’s agents sent to locate her. Meanwhile, Selden has hired private investigators, offered rewards, and mobilised every contact he has to find his missing wife. As the net tightens, Deborah must decide whether to trust Keith, find the evidence she needs to expose Selden, and confront the man who killed her father and wants to kill her — before he finds her first.

Historical Significance
Woman in Hiding belongs to the cycle of “woman in peril” films noir that flourished in the late 1940s and early 1950s, alongside titles like Sorry, Wrong Number, Sleep, My Love, and Sudden Fear. These films centred the noir genre on female protagonists, creating suspenseful narratives driven by women’s intelligence, courage, and determination to survive. Ida Lupino, who was simultaneously developing her groundbreaking career as one of the only female directors working in Hollywood during this period, brings particular authority and authenticity to the role of a woman who must rely entirely on her own resources. The real-life romance between Lupino and Howard Duff — they married in 1951, the year after this film — adds an intriguing subtext to their on-screen chemistry. Through colorization, this taut and engaging noir thriller has been preserved for modern audiences in an atmospheric new visual presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Movie-Specific Questions
Q: Is this a typical film noir?
A: It is a woman-centred noir, which gives it a distinctive flavour. While it shares the genre’s characteristic atmosphere of danger and moral ambiguity, the perspective is that of a resourceful woman fighting for survival rather than the more common male protagonist. This makes it feel fresh and particularly engaging for modern audiences.
Q: How is Ida Lupino in this role?
A: Outstanding. Lupino was one of the most talented and versatile actresses of her generation, and her performance here captures both the terror of a woman hunted by her own husband and the fierce determination that keeps her one step ahead. Her intelligence and emotional authenticity make the thriller elements genuinely suspenseful.
Q: Is the romance subplot convincing?
A: Very much so. The real-life attraction between Lupino and Howard Duff translates into genuine on-screen chemistry, and the fact that Deborah cannot be sure whether Keith is trustworthy adds a layer of romantic tension that enriches the thriller plot considerably.
