Plot Summary

Mountain climbers have been disappearing with alarming regularity on the Trollenberg, a peak in the Swiss Alps, and those whose bodies are found have been gruesomely decapitated. A mysterious radioactive cloud clings permanently to the mountainside at a specific altitude, defying all meteorological explanation and terrifying the local population. Professor Crevett at the nearby observatory has been monitoring the phenomenon with growing alarm.

Alan Brooks, a United Nations science investigator, arrives at the mountain resort to look into the situation. He meets two sisters, one of whom — the telepathic Anne — begins experiencing disturbing psychic visions connected to whatever lurks within the cloud. Her sensitivity to the alien presence makes her both a valuable asset in understanding the threat and a vulnerable target for the creatures’ mind-control abilities.

Brooks organises a desperate defence while calling for military assistance, knowing that conventional weapons may be useless against beings that thrive on radiation. The climax delivers a spectacular battle between humanity and the alien invaders as the military launches a firebombing attack on the mountain itself in a last-ditch attempt to destroy the creatures before they can spread beyond the Trollenberg.
