Plot Summary
Victoria Kowelska (Valentina Cortese) is a Polish woman who survives the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp by assuming the identity of her dead friend Karin, an American citizen. Using Karin’s papers, Victoria emigrates to the United States and arrives in San Francisco, where she discovers that Karin’s young son Christopher is living with his guardian, the charming Alan Spender (Richard Basehart). A substantial inheritance from Karin’s wealthy aunt awaits the boy — and by extension, whoever controls him.
Victoria marries Alan, and they settle into a magnificent Victorian mansion perched on San Francisco’s Telegraph Hill, overlooking the bay. At first, the marriage seems a fairy-tale ending to Victoria’s wartime nightmare. But gradually, unsettling events begin to accumulate. Brake lines on her car are found cut. A glass of milk tastes peculiar. Objects move inexplicably in the night. Young Christopher has “accidents” that seem too convenient.
Victoria begins to suspect that her charming husband married her not out of love but to gain control of Christopher’s inheritance — and that she has become an obstacle to be eliminated. Major Marc Bennett (William Lundigan), an old friend of the real Karin’s family, notices the warning signs and tries to help Victoria uncover the truth. But Victoria faces a devastating double bind: if she exposes Alan’s schemes, she risks revealing her own stolen identity and losing everything, including the child she has come to love.
The thriller builds to a terrifying climax in the fog-shrouded mansion, where Victoria must confront the man she married and fight for the life she built on a foundation of deception.
