Plot Summary
Dr. Douglas Martin is a nuclear physicist working on atomic bomb tests in the Nevada desert. During an observation flight over a test site, his plane crashes under mysterious circumstances — and Martin is found alive without a scratch, bearing only a strange scar on his chest that he cannot explain. He has no memory of what happened between the crash and his recovery.
Back at the military base, Martin begins behaving erratically. He is caught stealing classified data about upcoming nuclear tests, and his colleagues and superiors grow increasingly suspicious. Under interrogation and truth serum, Martin recounts an extraordinary story: he was taken into a vast underground cavern beneath the desert by beings from the planet Astron Delta, bulging-eyed aliens who are breeding an army of giant insects and reptiles using radiation from the atomic tests. They resurrected Martin from death and implanted a compulsion to feed them nuclear data so they can harness enough energy to conquer Earth.
No one believes him, but Martin knows the invasion is real and imminent. Facing imprisonment as a traitor or madman, he must find a way to destroy the aliens’ power source before their monstrous army is unleashed upon the surface. This classic movie captures the atomic anxieties of the 1950s in a taut, suspenseful race against annihilation.

Historical Significance
Killers from Space is a quintessential product of 1950s atomic-age cinema, reflecting the era’s deep anxieties about nuclear testing, government secrecy, and the unknown consequences of humanity’s most dangerous technology. Directed by W. Lee Wilder (brother of the legendary Billy Wilder), the film was produced on a shoestring budget but compensated with a genuinely unsettling premise and committed performances. Peter Graves, who would later become a household name through Mission: Impossible and Airplane!, delivered an earnest leading performance that grounded even the most fantastical plot elements. The film’s use of stock footage from actual nuclear tests gave it an eerie documentary quality, while its underground alien lair — populated by enlarged footage of real lizards and insects — created a memorably strange atmosphere that has earned it a devoted cult following among classic science fiction enthusiasts.
