Plot Summary
Detective Joe Baron (Glenn Ford) is a good cop with a bad problem: he is broke. His beautiful, status-conscious wife Lisa (Elke Sommer) spends money faster than his modest police salary can earn it, demanding the luxurious lifestyle she enjoyed during her previous marriage to a wealthy man. Joe loves Lisa desperately, but the financial pressure is crushing — and growing worse every month.
When Joe and his partner Pete Dorados (Ricardo Montalban) investigate a routine burglary at the home of a wealthy doctor, Joe discovers that the doctor has a fortune in cash hidden in a private safe — money from an illegal drug operation that the doctor can never report as stolen. The temptation is agonizing: here is enough money to solve all of Joe’s problems, belonging to a criminal who has no legitimate claim to it and could never go to the police.
Joe hatches a plan to rob the doctor’s safe, using his detective’s knowledge of alarm systems, police patrol schedules, and criminal methods to commit what he believes will be the perfect crime. He recruits his old flame Rosalie (Rita Hayworth), a faded beauty who runs a bar near the doctor’s neighbourhood and has her own reasons for wanting revenge on the doctor. But the plan begins to unravel almost immediately. Pete becomes suspicious of Joe’s odd behaviour. The doctor proves more dangerous and better connected than anticipated. Lisa’s demands escalate rather than diminish. And Rosalie’s involvement introduces emotional complications that threaten to expose everything. The robbery spirals into violence, betrayal, and murder, and Joe discovers that the money trap he has constructed for himself has become an inescapable prison.
