Plot Summary

Skippy Skinner is a mischievous, irrepressible, and fundamentally good-hearted boy of about nine who lives on the comfortable, respectable side of a small American town during the depths of the Great Depression. Despite his parents’ stern warnings to stay away from the rough neighborhood across the tracks, Skippy regularly sneaks over to Shantytown — the ramshackle, impoverished settlement of tin-roofed shacks and muddy paths where the town’s poorest families live in conditions that the prosperous citizens prefer to ignore.

In Shantytown, Skippy has found his best friend in the whole world: Sooky Wayne, a cheerful, ragged little boy whose family has nothing but whose spirit is as rich as any millionaire’s child. Sooky’s most prized possession in all the world is his beloved dog, a scrappy mutt that follows him everywhere and sleeps at the foot of his bed. When the hard-hearted local dogcatcher captures Sooky’s dog and impounds it, the boys are told they have just three days to raise the seemingly impossible sum of three dollars to buy back the animal before it is destroyed.

For two boys in Depression-era America, three dollars might as well be three hundred. Skippy and Sooky launch a desperate, heartbreaking campaign to raise the money, trying every scheme their young imaginations can devise. They go door to door begging for odd jobs, they set up a lemonade stand that barely earns pennies, they try to sell Skippy’s treasured possessions, and they appeal to every adult they encounter — most of whom are too busy, too poor, or too indifferent to help. The money accumulates with agonizing slowness as the deadline approaches with terrifying speed. Along the way, Skippy confronts for the first time the harsh realities and unfair class divisions that separate the comfortable world where he lives from the desperate poverty of Shantytown — realities that the adults in his life have been carefully shielding him from. The quest to save one small dog becomes a profound journey of discovery about friendship, loyalty, and the injustice that runs through the heart of supposedly decent communities.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

Skippy was originally filmed in black and white during the early sound era, its Depression-era settings and child’s-eye perspective captured with remarkable naturalism. This professionally colorized restoration brings frame-by-frame precision to the tree-lined suburban streets of Skippy’s comfortable neighborhood, the ramshackle, heartbreaking charm of Shantytown with its makeshift dwellings and muddy lanes, and the extraordinarily expressive faces of its remarkably talented child actors. Historical Significance

Skippy earned nine-year-old Jackie Cooper a Best Actor nomination at the Academy Awards — making him the youngest nominee in Academy history at that time, a record that stood for decades. Director Norman Taurog won the Academy Award for Best Director for his sensitive, remarkably natural handling of the child performers, becoming the youngest director to win the award at age thirty-two. The film was based on Percy Crosby’s enormously popular syndicated comic strip, one of the most widely read in Depression-era America. Robert Coogan, younger brother of Jackie Coogan (the famous child star of The Kid with Chaplin), gives a touching performance as Sooky that earned a sequel film of his own. Through professional colorization, this landmark of early sound cinema reaches new audiences.
