Plot Summary

Salford, Lancashire, in the industrial north of England. Jo is seventeen, clever, observant, and profoundly alone. She lives in a succession of cheap rented rooms with her mother Helen, a brassy, selfish woman whose primary interests are men, drink, and her own pleasure. The relationship between mother and daughter is characterized by sharp, funny, and occasionally devastating verbal sparring — they know exactly how to wound each other, and they do so with practiced skill.

When Helen announces that she is marrying Peter, a younger man with money and a car, Jo is unceremoniously discarded. Helen leaves for her new life without a backward glance, and Jo is left alone in a dingy flat by the Manchester Ship Canal, navigating the world with nothing but her intelligence and her pride.

Jo finds brief tenderness with Jimmy, a black sailor whose gentleness and warmth offer something she has never experienced — genuine affection without conditions. Their relationship is short-lived — Jimmy’s ship sails, and Jo discovers she is pregnant. She is seventeen, alone, and carrying a mixed-race child in early 1960s England.

Into her life comes Geoffrey — ‘Geof’ — a gentle, sensitive art student who is gay and has been thrown out of his own lodgings. The two form an unlikely domestic partnership that becomes the emotional heart of the film. Geof cares for Jo with a tenderness and dedication that she has never received from her own mother, preparing for the baby, furnishing their modest flat, and providing the stability that Jo desperately needs.

Their fragile happiness is threatened by Helen’s return — her marriage has failed, and she wants to reassert her authority over Jo’s life. The collision between Helen’s selfishness and Geof’s quiet devotion forces Jo to confront what she truly needs and who genuinely cares for her.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

The colorization of A Taste of Honey brings the industrial landscapes and intimate human moments to vivid life — the deep gray and red brick of Salford’s terraced streets and factory chimneys, the murky green-brown of the Manchester Ship Canal reflecting the overcast northern sky, the warm amber of gas-lit interiors in the cheap rented flats where Jo and Helen spar, the bright splashes of color in Jo’s artwork and the scarves and accessories she uses to brighten her dreary surroundings, the deep blue of Jimmy’s naval uniform against the gray of the dockside, the pale green of spring in the parks where Jo and Geof walk and talk, the warm golden light of their modest flat as Geof makes it into a home, the rich brown of the industrial landscape that defines the characters’ world, the bright primary colors of the fairground where Jo and Jimmy share tender moments, and the soft natural light of the Lancashire countryside in glimpses of beauty beyond the urban grit. Historical Significance

A Taste of Honey is one of the landmark films of the British New Wave — the ‘kitchen sink’ movement that transformed British cinema in the late 1950s and early 1960s by depicting working-class life with unprecedented honesty and emotional authenticity. Shelagh Delaney wrote the original play when she was just eighteen, and its frank treatment of single motherhood, interracial relationships, and homosexuality was revolutionary for its time. Tony Richardson’s film adaptation opened up the play’s settings while preserving its raw emotional power, and his decision to shoot on location in Salford gave the film a documentary authenticity that conventional studio filming could never achieve. Rita Tushingham’s debut performance is one of the great screen debuts in British cinema — her Jo is fierce, funny, and heartbreakingly real. Murray Melvin’s gentle Geoffrey was one of the first openly sympathetic portrayals of a gay character in British cinema. The film won the BAFTA for Best British Screenplay and four awards at Cannes. Through colorization, this essential masterpiece of British cinema is preserved for modern audiences.
