Plot Summary

Stephen Doyle is a talented American journalist and foreign correspondent who stops in Ireland on his way back to the United States. During a walking tour of the beautiful Irish countryside, he has an extraordinary encounter — he meets Horace, a leprechaun who appears as a small, quick-witted Irish man with an impish sense of humour and an infuriating habit of being right about everything. Stephen also meets Nora, a lovely young Irish woman whose simple warmth and genuine spirit captivate him immediately.

Returning to New York, Stephen expects to resume his career and his relationship with Frances, the sophisticated and ambitious daughter of D.C. Doyle, a wealthy and unscrupulous political operator who wants Stephen to use his writing talents in the service of a corrupt political campaign. The job offers enormous financial rewards and social prestige, but it would require Stephen to abandon his journalistic integrity and become a paid propagandist.

To Stephen’s astonishment, Horace the leprechaun appears in New York, having attached himself to the journalist with the stated intention of making sure Stephen makes the right choices in life — whether Stephen wants the help or not. Horace’s magical abilities allow him to create delightful chaos in the world of New York power politics, undermining Stephen’s cynical march toward wealth and ambition at every turn.
