Plot Summary

Jim Hardy, Ted Hanover, and Lila Dixon are a successful nightclub act, but Jim grows tired of the grueling entertainment world and dreams of a simpler life. He purchases a farmhouse in Connecticut, planning to leave show business behind and live off the land. Ted and Lila, who are romantically involved, continue performing as a duo.

Farm life proves far more challenging than Jim anticipated, and his Connecticut retreat is heading toward financial ruin. Inspiration strikes when Jim conceives a novel idea — he will convert the farmhouse into Holiday Inn, an entertainment club that opens its doors only on public holidays, allowing him to perform just fifteen nights a year while enjoying peaceful country living the rest of the time.

Jim meets Linda Mason, a talented and charming aspiring singer, and invites her to perform at Holiday Inn. A romance blossoms between them as they work together to make the club a success. Each holiday brings a new show, a new Irving Berlin song, and new staging — from the intimate romance of Valentine’s Day to the patriotic fervor of the Fourth of July to the joyful warmth of Thanksgiving.

Complications arise when Ted Hanover, now split from Lila, visits Holiday Inn and becomes enchanted by Linda’s talent and beauty. Hollywood comes calling with an offer to make Linda a movie star, and Jim must decide whether to fight for the woman he loves or let her pursue her dreams. The rivalry between Jim and Ted over Linda — and over the fate of Holiday Inn itself — builds through the holiday calendar toward a Christmas Eve resolution that has become one of the most beloved scenes in American musical cinema, featuring the definitive performance of ‘White Christmas.’

Historical Significance

Holiday Inn is one of the most culturally significant musical films in American cinema history. Its centerpiece, Irving Berlin’s ‘White Christmas’ performed by Bing Crosby, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and went on to become the best-selling single in recording history. The song’s global success was so enormous that it inspired a 1954 follow-up film titled White Christmas. The concept of Holiday Inn itself — a club celebrating holidays — was so appealing that the name was later licensed for the famous hotel chain. The film showcases two of Hollywood’s greatest entertainers at the peak of their powers, with Irving Berlin providing one of the greatest collections of songs ever assembled for a single film. Fred Astaire’s firecracker dance remains one of the most celebrated solo dance sequences in cinema. Through colorization, this essential piece of American popular culture is preserved for modern audiences.
