Plot Summary
Harry Turner (Bing Crosby) and Chester Babcock (Bob Hope) are two ageing American con artists working the streets of Calcutta, running scams that are becoming less successful as the years take their toll. When Chester accidentally memorises a secret mathematical formula for rocket fuel after being treated by a Tibetan lama, the duo becomes the target of a sinister international organisation called The Third Echelon, which intends to use the formula to dominate space travel and, by extension, the world.
The chase takes Harry and Chester from India to Hong Kong to England and eventually into outer space — literally — as the bumbling pair stumbles from one dangerous situation to the next with the comic timing and buddy chemistry that had made them the most popular comedy team in cinema for two decades. Joan Collins, playing a glamorous spy whose allegiances shift with the wind, adds romantic intrigue and double-crossing complications. The Third Echelon’s leader, played with scene-stealing menace by Robert Morley, dispatches increasingly comical agents to capture Chester’s formula-laden brain.
The film is packed with the trademark Road ingredients: Hope’s rapid-fire wisecracks, Crosby’s unflappable cool, their competitive bickering over the beautiful woman, breaking the fourth wall to address the audience, and a parade of celebrity cameos. The climax — which sends the boys into actual outer space — is the most spectacularly absurd ending in Road picture history.
Cast & Crew
Director: Norman Panama
Stars: Bob Hope and Bing Crosby demonstrate that their chemistry — built over twenty years and six previous Road films — remains brilliantly intact. Hope’s motor-mouth cowardice and Crosby’s smooth, unruffled cool play off each other with the ease of old friends who can time a joke in their sleep. Joan Collins brings beauty and sharp comic timing to the female lead, and the guest appearances by Peter Sellers, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin are delightful surprises.
