Plot Summary

Young Pud Northrup (Bobs Watson) is the grandson of aging, free-spirited Julian “Gramps” Northrup (Lionel Barrymore) and the gentle Nellie “Granny” Northrup (Beulah Bondi). When Pud’s parents are killed in a car accident, the boy is left entirely in the care of his grandparents. Their bond is deep, warm, and joyful — Gramps indulges the boy in a way that his more proper relatives do not approve of.

The chief antagonist is the scheming Demetria Riffle (Eily Malyon), a sharp-tongued relative who wants to take custody of Pud and send Gramps to a home for the elderly. Then, one mysterious afternoon, Gramps encounters a courteous, well-dressed gentleman in the garden: Mr. Brink (Cedric Hardwicke), who is Death come to claim him.
