Plot Summary

Sir Alfred de Carter (Rex Harrison) is a brilliant, egotistical, and supremely self-confident British symphony conductor who has been touring internationally for months. Returning home to his beautiful young wife Daphne (Linda Darnell), Alfred discovers that his suspicious brother-in-law August (Rudy Vallee) hired a private detective to follow Daphne during Alfred’s absence — and the detective’s report suggests that Daphne has been having an affair with Alfred’s handsome young personal secretary, Tony.

Alfred is devastated. The man who commands orchestras with supreme authority and intellectual brilliance is reduced to a jealous wreck by the mere suggestion of infidelity. At his evening concert, conducting three pieces of music, Alfred’s tortured imagination takes flight in three extraordinary fantasy sequences — each one a complete miniature film triggered by the emotional character of the music he is conducting.

During Rossini’s overture to Semiramide, Alfred fantasises an elegant murder plot: he will kill Daphne, frame Tony for the crime, and walk away untouched — the perfect intellectual revenge executed with the precision of a great performance. During Wagner’s reconciliation theme from Tannhäuser, he envisions a noble scenario where he forgives Daphne, writes her a generous cheque, and sends her away with Tony in a gesture of magnificent self-sacrifice. During Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini, he imagines a wild Russian-roulette confrontation where chance decides everyone’s fate.

The comedy’s genius manifests when the concert ends and Alfred attempts to execute his first fantasy — the elegant murder — in reality. Every action that unfolded with balletic precision in his imagination collapses into catastrophic slapstick chaos in the real world. The recording machine he planned to use as an alibi defeats him completely, the door refuse to cooperate, and the plan disintegrates into one of cinema’s greatest extended sequences of physical comedy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Movie-Specific Questions

Q: Do I need to know classical music to enjoy this?
A: Not at all. The classical pieces are used to trigger and accompany the fantasy sequences, but you need no musical knowledge to appreciate the brilliant comedy. The contrast between the elegant fantasies and the chaotic reality is hilarious regardless of your familiarity with Rossini, Wagner, or Tchaikovsky.

Q: Is the slapstick sequence really that funny?
A: It is one of the longest and most brilliantly sustained slapstick sequences in cinema history. Rex Harrison — not typically associated with physical comedy — proves himself a magnificent clown as every element of the “perfect” plan goes catastrophically wrong.

Q: How dark is the comedy?
A: The film deals with murder fantasies, jealousy, and potential infidelity, but always within a comic framework. Sturges balances the darkness with brilliant wit and absurdist humour, creating something that is simultaneously disturbing and hilarious.
