Plot Summary
As an infant, a boy is lost in the African jungle after a lion kills his father. Raised among the pride, he grows into Kaspa, a powerful, agile man who communicates with animals and moves through the wilderness with the grace of the great cats that adopted him. His extraordinary physicality and fearless nature make him a legend among the local tribes.
When a circus expedition ventures into the jungle, they capture Kaspa along with several animals and transport them all to America for exhibition. Ann Rogers, a kind-hearted young woman, takes an interest in Kaspa and begins teaching him the ways of civilization. But the transition from jungle freedom to urban captivity proves painful and dangerous. Kaspa is exploited by unscrupulous showmen, bewildered by the noise and cruelty of city life, and increasingly desperate to liberate the caged animals he considers his family.
Tensions escalate when corrupt promoters push Kaspa into increasingly dangerous spectacles for profit, while Ann fights to protect the man she has come to care for. The climax erupts in a dramatic confrontation between Kaspa’s primal loyalty to the animal world and the human bonds he has begun to form. This classic movie showcases Crabbe’s remarkable physical talents in a role that launched his career as one of Hollywood’s great action stars.

Historical Significance
King of the Jungle was the film that launched Buster Crabbe from Olympic swimmer to Hollywood action star. Fresh from winning the gold medal in the 400-metre freestyle at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, Crabbe brought an authenticity to the physical demands of the role that no studio stunt double could match. His performance caught the attention of Universal Studios, leading directly to his casting as Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers in the serials that would make him a household name. The film capitalized on the early 1930s vogue for jungle adventure pictures, offering a variation on the Tarzan formula with its own distinctive emphasis on the cruelty of civilization rather than the savagery of nature. The pre-Code production allowed for a frankness in depicting exploitation and corruption that would vanish from Hollywood screens after 1934.
