Plot Summary

Stanley Livington works at a bookstore alongside his friend Buzz Johnson, and their lives are thoroughly unremarkable until a wealthy woman named Diana Emerson overhears Stanley mentioning the Doyle region of Africa. What she does not realise is that Stanley is simply referencing where a particular book is shelved — not demonstrating any actual knowledge of African geography. Convinced that Stanley is an expert who can guide her expedition to find a legendary treasure, Diana recruits both men for the dangerous journey.

The scheming Clyde Beatty, who has his own designs on the treasure, joins the expedition along with several other colourful characters. Stanley and Buzz quickly find themselves completely out of their depth as they venture into the African wilderness, where every new encounter brings fresh opportunities for comedic disaster.

The jungle proves to be a dangerous and bewildering environment for the two city dwellers. Stanley’s supposed expertise is constantly put to the test by encounters with lions, gorillas, crocodiles, and other wildlife, none of which he has the slightest idea how to handle. Buzz, despite his bluster, proves equally helpless in the face of genuine danger, and the pair stumble from one life-threatening situation to another through a combination of blind luck and accidental brilliance.

As the expedition pushes deeper into the jungle, the various schemers within the group begin to reveal their true intentions, and Stanley and Buzz find themselves caught between rival factions all seeking the treasure. The climax brings all the competing interests together in a spectacular sequence of chases, misunderstandings, and physical comedy that showcases Abbott and Costello at their most energetic and inventive.
