Plot Summary

Commissioner R.G. Sanders is a seasoned British colonial administrator responsible for maintaining order across a vast, river-threaded territory in West Africa. Unlike many of his colonial counterparts, Sanders has earned the respect of the local chiefs through his deep knowledge of tribal customs, his willingness to learn local languages, and his reputation for fair dealing. Sanders’ greatest ally is Bosambo, a charismatic, quick-witted chief of the Ochori people who has risen from humble origins through intelligence, courage, and an infectious energy that commands loyalty.
