Plot Summary
Alexander Dodd is a natural-born salesman with an unstoppable gift for fast talking, boundless optimism, and a complete inability to recognise his own limitations. When he stumbles upon the opportunity to sell enormous earthmoving tractors — massive, powerful machines capable of reshaping landscapes — he sees only dollar signs and the chance to impress the beautiful girl he has been pursuing. The fact that he knows absolutely nothing about tractors, construction, or heavy machinery does not strike him as a significant obstacle.
Armed with nothing but supreme confidence and a hastily memorised sales pitch, Alexander manages to talk his way into a demonstration of the company’s flagship tractor for a wealthy and important potential customer. The demonstration, naturally, goes spectacularly wrong from the very first moment, as Alexander’s complete ignorance of the controls sends the massive machine careening through fences, buildings, gardens, and assorted obstacles in a mounting crescendo of destruction that leaves a trail of devastation across the countryside.
Rather than being discouraged by these catastrophic results, Alexander’s irrepressible optimism and fast-talking ability keep him bouncing back from each disaster with renewed confidence and increasingly creative explanations for why everything is actually going according to plan. His romantic pursuit of the boss’s daughter adds urgency to his desperate attempts to close a sale, as he believes that proving himself as a successful tractor salesman is the key to winning her heart.
The film builds to an extended climactic sequence of maximum destruction as Alexander’s final, desperate demonstration attempt coincides with a genuine emergency that, through sheer luck and accidental competence, allows him to save the day in the most unlikely manner possible. The combination of large-scale physical comedy, Joe E. Brown’s incredible mugging and athletic slapstick, and the endlessly escalating absurdity of the situations makes this one of the great comedy performances of the 1930s.
