Plot Summary
Marian Ives (Joyce Howard), a young schoolteacher, is haunted by the disappearance of her colleague and friend who vanished on the Yorkshire moors a year earlier. Despite warnings from everyone around her, Marian is determined to discover the truth and travels to the remote moorland area where her friend was last seen. Accompanied by her sensible friend Doris (Mary Clare), Marian sets out across the treacherous moors.
When a violent storm forces the two women to seek shelter, they find refuge in an isolated mansion owned by Stephen Doringcourt (James Mason), a gifted but psychologically damaged composer and former fighter pilot who lives as a virtual recluse on the moors. Doringcourt has retreated from the world after traumatic wartime experiences that have left him prone to violent episodes and dark moods. He lives with only his sinister housekeeper Mrs. Donatelli (Mary Clare) and a handful of servants for company.
Marian is simultaneously attracted to and frightened by Doringcourt. His intelligence, sensitivity, and obvious suffering draw her sympathy and romantic interest, but his unpredictable behavior and the dark warnings she receives about him inspire genuine fear. Strange things begin to happen in the mansion β unexplained sounds, sudden appearances and disappearances, and an atmosphere of menace that grows more oppressive as Marian’s investigation into her friend’s disappearance leads her closer to dangerous secrets.
The moors themselves become a character in the story β vast, fog-shrouded, and treacherous, hiding bogs that can swallow a person without trace. The wildness of the landscape mirrors the psychological turbulence of Doringcourt’s damaged mind, and Marian must determine whether the danger she faces comes from the man she is falling in love with, from someone else in the household, or from the moors themselves.
