Plot Summary
During the chaos of World War I, celebrated British novelist Edgar Brodie is officially reported killed in action β but in reality, he has been recruited by British Intelligence for a covert mission and reborn under the assumed identity of Captain Richard Ashenden. Dispatched to neutral Switzerland, Ashenden is paired with two unlikely partners: the unpredictable, flamboyant, and slightly unhinged assassin known only as the General, played with wild-eyed relish by Peter Lorre, and the beautiful Elsa Carrington, who is to pose as Ashenden’s wife to provide cover for their activities.
Their mission is to identify and eliminate an enemy spy who is using Switzerland as a transit point to travel to Constantinople with vital military secrets. A charming and smooth-talking American named Robert Marvin complicates matters considerably by insinuating himself into their social circle and paying obvious romantic attention to Elsa. Ashenden suspects Marvin may be their target, but the General fixates on a different suspect β a kindly old Englishman hiking in the Alps. The General lures the innocent tourist to a mountain peak and murders him, and when the truth of the mistake is revealed β the man was a harmless tourist with a wife waiting for him at his hotel β Ashenden is consumed with guilt.
Elsa, horrified by the senseless killing, threatens to abandon the mission entirely and denounce the whole operation. The moral crisis deepens as Ashenden realizes that the life of an intelligence agent requires him to commit acts that destroy his humanity. When the real spy’s identity finally becomes clear, a furious chase leads to a dramatic confrontation aboard a train hurtling through the Swiss Alps toward the Turkish border. The climactic derailment forces a final reckoning between duty, conscience, and survival.

Historical Significance
Based on W. Somerset Maugham’s celebrated Ashenden spy stories β which Maugham drew from his own real experiences as a British intelligence agent during World War I β Secret Agent is a key film in Hitchcock’s celebrated British thriller period, made between The 39 Steps and Sabotage. The film features John Gielgud, widely considered the greatest stage actor of his generation, in a rare screen leading role, and Peter Lorre in a scene-stealing, wildly entertaining turn as the eccentric General. Hitchcock’s exploration of the moral ambiguity inherent in espionage β the idea that serving one’s country can require terrible acts against innocent people β predates the modern spy thriller by decades and anticipates the moral complexities of John le CarrΓ© by a generation. Through professional colorization, one of the master of suspense’s most underrated works reaches new audiences.
