Plot Summary

Mr. Moto (Peter Lorre) arrives in the bustling port city of Port Said, Egypt, on the trail of a dangerous international conspiracy that threatens to plunge Europe into war. A ring of foreign agents, led by the suave and calculating master spy Doyen (George Sanders) and his ruthless accomplice Danforth (John Carradine), plan to sabotage the French fleet as it passes through the Suez Canal and frame the British for the attack, hoping to shatter the fragile alliance between France and England on the very eve of armed conflict. A British naval intelligence agent has already been murdered after getting too close to the truth, and the trail of bodies is growing.

Working undercover and adopting various cunning disguises, Moto navigates the treacherous underworld of Port Said, a crossroads city teeming with smugglers, informants, and double agents. He befriends the murdered agent’s contact, a young woman named Mary Erik (Virginia Field) who unknowingly holds crucial information about the plot, while also gaining the confidence of the conspirators themselves. Doyen remains suspicious of the quiet, unassuming Japanese gentleman who seems to appear wherever danger lurks, and sets increasingly deadly traps to expose and eliminate him. With time running out before the French fleet enters the canal, Moto uses his brilliant deductive intellect, his mastery of disguise, and his formidable martial arts skills to unmask the conspirators, rescue the captives, and prevent an international catastrophe that could change the course of history. This classic movie delivers fast-paced espionage excitement against a richly atmospheric Mediterranean backdrop.

Historical Significance

Mr. Moto’s Last Warning was the sixth in the popular series of eight Mr. Moto films starring Peter Lorre, produced by 20th Century Fox between 1937 and 1939. Based on the character created by Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist John P. Marquand, the series was one of Hollywood’s most successful detective franchises of the 1930s, rivaling the Charlie Chan and Sherlock Holmes series in popularity. This installment featured an exceptionally impressive supporting cast, with George Sanders bringing cold menace to the role of the chief villain and John Carradine delivering a memorably sinister performance as his accomplice. The series was discontinued in 1939 not due to declining quality but because of growing political tensions with Japan; the portrayal of a heroic Japanese character became problematic as U.S.-Japan relations deteriorated in the lead-up to World War II. The colorization enhances the atmospheric Mediterranean setting and the film’s visual storytelling.
