Plot Summary

Michael Lanyard, the ‘Lone Wolf’ (Warren William), has once again sworn off crime and settled into the comfortable life of a respectable gentleman. But his peaceful retirement is shattered when he attends a glamorous Washington society party and discovers that a network of foreign spies is operating in the highest echelons of American political and military society, targeting classified defense plans that could compromise national security.

Lanyard’s former associate — a beautiful and dangerous woman from his criminal past named Val Carson (Ida Lupino) — is at the centre of the espionage ring. Val uses her seductive charms and her knowledge of Lanyard’s weaknesses to draw him into the conspiracy, alternately threatening and enticing him. The stolen defense plans change hands repeatedly through a dizzying series of double-crosses, hidden compartments, midnight rendezvous, and elegant deceptions.

While Lanyard tries to recover the plans and expose the spy ring, Inspector Crane remains convinced that the Lone Wolf is behind the entire plot, adding the constant pressure of police pursuit to an already dangerous situation. With his faithful valet Jamison (Eric Blore) providing nervous comic relief and unsolicited opinions, Lanyard must navigate between the ruthless spies, the suspicious police, and the manipulative Val — using every trick from his criminal repertoire to outwit them all. The film builds to a tense climactic sequence as the spies attempt to smuggle the plans out of the country and Lanyard races to stop them in a satisfying finale of quick wits and elegant derring-do.
