Plot Summary
Crystal Doller has built a successful and respectable new life for herself in a quiet small town, far from the nightmarish past she has worked so hard to leave behind. She runs the local newspaper with competence and authority, has earned the respect and affection of her community, and is raising her daughter in a safe and nurturing environment. No one in town knows the terrible secret of her previous life — that she was once married to a violent and dangerous man who was convicted of murder and supposedly executed for his crime.
Her carefully constructed world collapses in an instant when her presumed-dead husband Steve walks into town, very much alive and consumed by a cold, calculating fury. He was not executed after all — his sentence was commuted, and he has served his time in prison, spending every day of his long incarceration nursing a burning hatred for the wife who testified against him at his trial and who he believes betrayed him.
Steve does not simply want revenge — he wants to torment Crystal, to demonstrate his power over her, and to systematically destroy everything she has built before he delivers the final blow. He insinuates himself into the community, drops hints about Crystal’s secret past, and makes thinly veiled threats that keep her in a state of constant terror. Crystal cannot simply go to the police, because revealing the truth about her past would destroy the life and reputation she has built and traumatise the daughter who knows nothing of her mother’s history.
Trapped between the need to protect her secret and the need to protect her life, Crystal must find the courage and resourcefulness to confront her psychopathic husband on her own terms. The tension builds relentlessly as Steve tightens his grip and Crystal searches desperately for a way to stop him before he carries out his murderous plan. The explosive climax delivers a powerful confrontation that tests Crystal’s strength and determination to their absolute limits.
