Plot Summary
A spaceship crashes into the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Sicily, the sole survivor of mankind’s first expedition to Venus. Colonel Robert Calder is pulled barely alive from the wreckage by local fishermen, but the most significant cargo from the mission is a sealed specimen container holding a gelatinous egg brought back from the surface of Venus for scientific study.
A local boy finds the container washed ashore and sells it to a zoologist, Dr. Leonardo, and his granddaughter Marisa. When the egg hatches, it reveals a small, strange creature — vaguely reptilian but walking upright on two legs, with an almost humanoid quality that is both fascinating and disturbing. The creature, which scientists will later name the Ymir, is docile at first but begins growing at an astonishing rate, doubling in size every few hours as it metabolizes Earth’s atmosphere.
Colonel Calder, recovering from his injuries, realizes the danger and tries to alert the authorities, but the Ymir has already escaped into the Sicilian countryside. The creature is not naturally aggressive — it is confused, frightened, and simply trying to survive in a world utterly alien to it. But its rapidly increasing size and strength make it dangerous regardless of its intentions, and each encounter with humans who attack it out of fear drives it to more violent self-defense.
As the Ymir grows to enormous proportions, the military mobilizes to capture or destroy it. The creature makes its way to Rome, where it reaches its full towering height. The climactic battle takes place among the ancient monuments of the Eternal City as the military attempts to stop the Ymir in a devastating confrontation at the Colosseum, one of the most spectacular and emotionally powerful sequences in all of science fiction cinema.

Historical Significance
20 Million Miles to Earth is widely considered one of Ray Harryhausen’s greatest achievements. The Ymir is perhaps his most sympathetic creation — a creature that never asked to be brought to Earth and reacts to its alien environment with confusion and fear rather than malice, evoking genuine audience sympathy even as it causes destruction. The Italian locations give the film a visual grandeur far beyond its modest budget, and the climactic battle at the Colosseum is one of the most iconic sequences in science fiction cinema. Harryhausen himself has cited this as one of his personal favorites. The film was produced by Charles H. Schneer, continuing their legendary partnership. Through colorization, this masterpiece of stop-motion animation and creature design is preserved for modern audiences.
