Plot Summary

Burlesque comedian Peanuts White (Bob Hope) is an amiable, small-time entertainer whose biggest concern is his next gig — until the U.S. government discovers he bears an uncanny resemblance to the notorious international spy Eric Augustine. When Augustine is captured, intelligence agents recruit the hapless Peanuts to impersonate him on a dangerous mission to the exotic city of Tangier, Morocco, to intercept a microfilm containing top-secret military plans before it falls into enemy hands. Completely out of his depth and terrified at every turn, Peanuts is given a crash course in Augustine’s mannerisms, contacts, and tradecraft, then dropped into the heart of an international espionage ring where everyone he meets could be an ally or an assassin.

His situation is further complicated — and considerably brightened — by the stunning Lily Dalbray (Hedy Lamarr), Augustine’s seductive partner who may or may not be trustworthy. Lily is suspicious of the subtle changes in “Augustine’s” behavior, and Peanuts must constantly improvise to maintain his cover while dodging the deadly Karl Brubaker (Francis L. Sullivan), a massive, menacing arms dealer who wants the microfilm for himself, and Tasso (Arnold Moss), a ruthless operative playing all sides. As Peanuts bumbles through one perilous situation after another — escaping through Tangier’s labyrinthine bazaars, surviving rooftop chases, narrowly avoiding assassination in his own hotel room, and trying desperately to remember his spy instructions — his natural cowardice and lightning-quick wit prove surprisingly effective against the suave villains who are deadly serious about getting the microfilm. The climax builds to a spectacular chase through the streets and rooftops of Tangier. This classic movie delivers non-stop laughs as Hope turns the spy genre brilliantly on its head.

Historical Significance

My Favorite Spy was the last and most lavish of Bob Hope’s popular “My Favorite” comedy-thriller trilogy, following My Favorite Blonde (1942) and My Favorite Brunette (1947). The film paired Hope with Hedy Lamarr, who was not only one of cinema’s greatest beauties but also a brilliant inventor — she co-developed frequency-hopping spread-spectrum technology during World War II, a foundational concept for modern Wi-Fi and Bluetooth communications. Lamarr brings genuine glamour and surprising comedic skill to her role, proving a perfect foil for Hope’s cowardly bluster. The film’s elaborate Tangier sets, designed by art directors Hal Pereira and Roland Anderson, were among the most expensive Paramount produced that year, creating a convincing North African atmosphere entirely on the studio lot. Director Norman Z. McLeod, who had previously directed the Marx Brothers in Horse Feathers and Monkey Business, brought expert comedic pacing to the elaborate set pieces. The colorization brings new visual splendor to this entertaining Cold War comedy.
