Plot Summary

It is 1860, the final chaotic years of the Tokugawa shogunate, and Japan is being torn apart by the bitter conflict between those who want to open the country to Western trade and those who demand the expulsion of all foreigners. At the center of this storm is Niiro Tsuruchiyo, a masterless samurai — a ronin — of extraordinary sword skill but unknown parentage, who is driven by an all-consuming obsession to discover the identity of his father and claim the status in society that he believes is his birthright.

Niiro attaches himself to a group of fanatical conspirators from the Mito domain who are plotting to assassinate Ii Naosuke, the powerful and deeply hated regent of the Tokugawa shogunate who has signed humiliating treaties with foreign powers and brutally purged political opponents in the Ansei Purge. While the other conspirators are motivated by patriotic rage and political conviction, Niiro is driven by something far more personal: he has learned that one of the high-ranking officials connected to the plot may be able to reveal the secret of his birth. He gambles everything on the belief that proving himself in this act of political violence will open the doors that have been closed to him his entire life.

As a devastating snowstorm engulfs Edo on the fateful morning of March 24, the conspirators gather in the swirling white outside the Sakurada Gate of Edo Castle, their faces hidden beneath straw hats and rain cloaks, waiting for Ii Naosuke’s palanquin to emerge. The tension builds unbearably as Niiro wrestles with his divided motives, and the film erupts into a ferocious battle in the snow that is both politically seismic and deeply personal. This classic movie builds to a devastating climax where ambition, identity, and bloodshed collide in one of cinema’s most powerful examinations of futility and self-destruction.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

Samurai Assassin was originally filmed in dramatic black and white, its stark widescreen cinematography emphasizing the tension and bleakness of late Edo-period Japan. This professionally colorized restoration transforms every scene with frame-by-frame precision, from the snow-covered castle gates and the dark interiors of conspiratorial meeting rooms to the deep indigo blues of samurai robes, the gleaming steel of drawn katanas, and the crimson spray of the climactic battle in the snow. The winter palette of the assassination scene — white snow stained with red blood under grey skies — becomes a devastatingly beautiful visual composition in color. The colorized version adds stunning visual power to this restored classic film. Now also available in colour — カラー化 — for audiences worldwide.

Historical Significance

Samurai Assassin dramatizes the real Sakuradamon Incident of March 24, 1860, one of the most pivotal moments in Japanese history. The assassination of Ii Naosuke by disaffected samurai outside the Sakurada Gate of Edo Castle sent shockwaves through the country and helped trigger the chain of events that would end the Tokugawa shogunate and the entire samurai era within less than a decade. Toshirō Mifune delivers a fierce and ultimately tragic performance as a man so consumed by his quest for identity that he cannot see the destruction it brings. Director Kihachi Okamoto was celebrated for his dynamic action choreography and his ability to blend visceral combat with psychological depth. The film’s unflinching examination of how personal ambition corrupts political ideals gives it a complexity rarely found in the samurai genre. Through professional colorization, this powerful jidaigeki reaches international audiences.
