Plot Summary

In the prehistoric era, the Rock People are a brutal, savage clan ruled by fear and violence, where the strongest take what they want and compassion is an unknown concept. When young warrior Tumak (Victor Mature), the strongest and most fearless of the Rock People, is cast out by his father Akhoba (Lon Chaney Jr.) after a fierce dispute over food — a struggle that leaves Akhoba seriously injured — he wanders alone through a hostile landscape of smoking volcanoes, treacherous swamps, and enormous predatory creatures. Battered, starving, and near death after days of wandering, Tumak collapses on a beach where he is discovered by the Shell People, a gentle, cooperative tribe living peacefully by the sea.

Among the Shell People he meets the beautiful and compassionate Loana (Carole Landis), who nurses him back to health and teaches him kindness, sharing, and cooperation — concepts utterly foreign to his violent upbringing.
