Plot Summary

Manuel is a poor cowherd living in the harsh, drought-stricken backlands of northeastern Brazil — the sertão — where the land is as unforgiving as the social system that keeps the peasants in perpetual misery. When a dispute with his brutal landlord over the fair division of cattle leads to a violent confrontation, Manuel and his wife Rosa are forced to flee their meager home and become fugitives in the vast and merciless landscape.

Desperate and homeless, they are drawn to Sebastião, a messianic religious leader whose fanatical preaching promises divine salvation and the coming of a heavenly paradise for the suffering poor. Manuel is captivated by Sebastião’s apocalyptic vision and becomes a devoted follower, participating in increasingly extreme acts of devotion and violence as the prophet’s movement swells with desperate believers who have nothing left to lose.

Rosa, more practical and clear-eyed than her husband, sees the prophet for what he is — a deluded or manipulative figure leading his followers toward destruction. Her resistance creates a fatal crisis within the movement. When the religious commune collapses in violence, Manuel and Rosa flee once again into the wilderness, where they encounter Corisco, a legendary cangaceiro — one of the bandit leaders who roam the sertão living by the sword and the gun.

Corisco offers Manuel a different kind of liberation — not through divine intervention but through armed rebellion against the oppressors. But pursuing them all is Antonio das Mortes, a mythic and terrifying figure hired by the landowners and the church to eliminate both prophets and bandits who threaten the established order.
