Plot Summary

Robert Gregory is a gifted singer from abroad who has been living and performing in the United States but faces an imminent deportation order that threatens to end his American dream. With only a short time before he must leave the country, Robert enters a major radio singing contest that could provide him with the professional standing and public recognition needed to fight the deportation and establish himself as a legitimate artist in America.

While preparing for the contest, Robert meets Patricia O’Malley, a spirited and beautiful young woman who is on her way to marry Charles, a wealthy but boring businessman who can provide financial security but not the passion and excitement that Patricia secretly craves. Robert and Patricia are drawn to each other immediately, but Patricia’s sense of obligation to Charles and Robert’s uncertain immigration status create seemingly insurmountable obstacles to their romance.

As Robert rehearses for the all-important contest, Patricia finds herself increasingly torn between the safe future Charles represents and the exciting, unpredictable world that Robert offers. She becomes Robert’s greatest supporter and unofficial coach, helping him refine his performances and navigate the competitive world of radio entertainment while trying to convince herself that her engagement to Charles is the sensible choice.

The romantic tension builds alongside the musical competition, as Robert’s extraordinary voice wins over audiences and judges alike while his personal charm wins Patricia’s heart. The climax brings both the contest and the romantic story to a head, as Robert must deliver the performance of his life to save his career and his place in America, while Patricia must decide once and for all whether to follow her heart or honor her commitment to another man.
