Plot Summary

A dangerous lunatic named Dr. Dodd has been released from a criminal asylum, and he has unfinished business. Before his incarceration, Dodd compiled a list of six people — the judge, prosecutor, witnesses, and defending barrister who he believes conspired to send him away — and he intends to murder them all, one by one, in order.

William Fitch is a thoroughly incompetent barrister whose participation in Dodd’s original trial was characterized by the same bumbling inefficiency that marks every aspect of his legal career. Now Fitch discovers to his horror that his name appears on Dodd’s death list — and the madman has already begun working his way through the names with lethal efficiency.

With his faithful but equally inept friend Claude Dobbey in tow, Fitch attempts to warn the remaining targets and avoid becoming a victim himself. But their efforts to help prove catastrophically counterproductive, as their clumsy interventions create chaos everywhere they go while Dodd continues his methodical campaign of murder.

The chase leads Fitch and Dobbey through a series of increasingly outrageous scrapes — encounters with suspicious police officers, dangerous confrontations with the homicidal Dodd, and misadventures that exploit London’s wartime landscape to brilliant comic effect. The stakes escalate relentlessly until the extraordinary climax, set on and around the clocktower of Big Ben, where Fitch must confront Dodd in a vertigo-inducing sequence of physical comedy that combines genuine tension with inspired slapstick in a manner worthy of Harold Lloyd himself.

Mervyn Johns is brilliantly sinister as the urbane and methodical Dodd, creating a villain both genuinely threatening and absurdly polite.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

The colorization of My Learned Friend brings wartime London and its comedy to vivid life — the warm rich brown and deep green leather of the legal chambers where Fitch receives the terrible news about Dodd’s list, the grey-blue of London’s wartime streets where barrage balloons float overhead and sandbags line building entrances, the black of Fitch’s barrister’s gown flapping behind him as he flees through courtrooms and corridors, the warm golden stone of the Houses of Parliament and the iconic cream-and-gold face of Big Ben gleaming against grey London skies during the spectacular climactic sequence, the deep crimson of theatrical curtains in the entertainment venue where one of Dodd’s murder schemes unfolds, the cold blue-grey steel of wartime London’s defensive infrastructure, the warm amber of pub lamplight where Fitch and Dobbey plot their futile escape strategies, the green of Hyde Park where desperate chases unfold, and the dramatic contrast of light and shadow in the Big Ben clocktower interior where comedy and vertigo combine in cinema’s most unforgettable climax. Historical Significance

My Learned Friend is widely regarded as Will Hay’s finest film and one of the greatest British comedies ever made. The Big Ben climax — in which Hay performs an extraordinary sequence of physical comedy on the clock face and mechanism of London’s most famous landmark — is consistently ranked among the greatest comedy set pieces in world cinema, drawing favorable comparison with Harold Lloyd’s iconic clock-hanging scene in Safety Last. Will Hay, who also co-directed, demonstrates the full range of his genius: impeccable timing, physical courage, and the ability to generate comedy from character rather than mere gags. The film was Hay’s last starring role before his untimely death in 1949, making it a fitting capstone to one of British comedy’s most brilliant careers. Director Basil Dearden would go on to become one of British cinema’s finest directors. The film’s wartime London setting provides a fascinating visual record of the city during the Blitz era, while the thriller-comedy format anticipates the work of Alfred Hitchcock’s later British comedies. Through colorization, this towering achievement of British comedy is preserved for modern audiences.
