Plot Summary

Barry Storm arrives in Arizona consumed by a single obsession: finding the legendary Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine, a fabulously rich deposit of gold hidden somewhere in the treacherous Superstition Mountains. The mine has been the subject of treasure hunting expeditions for decades, and many who have ventured into those ancient peaks in search of its wealth have never returned.

As Barry begins his search, the film reaches back into history to tell the original story of the mine and the man who found it. Jacob Walz, a German immigrant known as ‘the Dutchman,’ discovered an astonishingly rich gold deposit deep in the Superstition Mountains in the 1870s. Rather than sharing his discovery, Walz guarded the secret of the mine’s location with paranoid ferocity, killing several men who followed him into the mountains and trusting no one with the truth.

The only person who came close to learning the mine’s secret was Julia Thomas, a beautiful, cunning, and utterly ruthless woman who set out to seduce the old Dutchman and extract the location of his mine. Ida Lupino portrays Julia with electrifying intensity as a woman whose beauty masks a calculating intelligence and a capacity for cruelty that matches Walz’s own. Their relationship becomes a vicious battle of wills between two people who are perfectly capable of destroying each other in pursuit of the gold that obsesses them both.

The past and present stories interweave as Barry’s modern search mirrors the deadly events of the original treasure hunt, and the Superstition Mountains prove as dangerous and unforgiving to contemporary seekers as they were to the doomed men and women of the nineteenth century. The legend of the Lost Dutchman’s Mine continues to claim victims across the generations.
