Plot Summary

Captain Jim Donatello commands a rugged sailing vessel that has long profited from the brutal, illegal slave trade along the African coast, running human cargo across the Atlantic in defiance of international law. Jim is a tough, practical man who has suppressed his conscience for years in pursuit of profit, but everything changes when he falls deeply in love with the refined, principled Nancy Marlowe and marries her. Determined to build a life worthy of the woman he loves, Jim makes the momentous decision to abandon the slave trade forever and convert his ship to legitimate cargo hauling.

But his treacherous, ruthless first mate Jack Thompson and the hardened, brutal crew who have grown wealthy from the slave trade are furious at the prospect of losing their enormously lucrative business. They have no intention of becoming honest sailors hauling cotton and timber for a fraction of their former earnings. Thompson, a cold-blooded opportunist who has been waiting for an opportunity to seize command, begins secretly plotting a full-scale mutiny against the captain, recruiting the most dangerous members of the crew to his cause with promises of one final, massively profitable slave run.

As the ship sails toward the African coast on what Jim intends to be its first legitimate voyage, tensions between the captain and his increasingly rebellious crew escalate to a dangerous pitch. Nancy, who has come aboard for the voyage unaware of her husband’s dark past, begins to sense the menace that surrounds them. A young, brave cabin boy named Doatello, played by Mickey Rooney, becomes an unlikely hero caught in the middle of the deadly power struggle. When Thompson finally launches his mutiny in a violent, bloody uprising, Jim must fight desperately for his life, the safety of his wife, the loyalty of what few crew members remain faithful, and ultimately for the freedom and lives of the African captives that Thompson’s men have already seized and imprisoned below decks.
