Plot Summary

Alien beings have been observing Earth with growing alarm. Humanity is on the verge of developing a weapon of unimaginable destructive power — a ‘solaranite’ bomb capable of igniting the very atoms of sunlight and destroying the entire universe. Having failed with their previous eight plans to warn humanity of this danger, the extraterrestrial visitors implement Plan 9: resurrecting recently deceased humans as obedient walking dead to demonstrate their superior technology and force world governments to listen.

The aliens select a Hollywood cemetery as their proving ground, where they reanimate three corpses — an old man who has recently died of grief, his wife who died before him, and a hulking police inspector killed in the line of duty. These shambling undead figures emerge from their graves to terrorize the surrounding neighborhood, drawing the attention of airline pilot Jeff Trent, who has already witnessed the aliens’ flying saucers during a commercial flight.

As the zombie attacks escalate and the flying saucers become impossible to ignore, the military becomes involved, dispatching investigators to the cemetery. Meanwhile, Jeff Trent and his terrified wife Paula find themselves in the center of the crisis as the alien commander Eros and his associate Tanna attempt to communicate their warning through their undead ambassadors.

The investigation leads to a climactic confrontation aboard the aliens’ flying saucer, where Eros delivers an impassioned speech about humanity’s reckless pursuit of destructive technology. The resolution involves fistfights, fire, and the unique brand of narrative logic that only Edward D. Wood Jr. could deliver.

Dudley Manlove delivers Eros’s dialogue with splendid theatrical conviction.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

The colorization of Plan 9 from Outer Space adds a wonderful new dimension to this beloved cult classic — the bright silver of the iconic flying saucers wobbling through dark blue night skies, the garish green of cemetery grass in scenes that shift between obvious day and night footage, the pale ghostly white of Vampira’s face and flowing black gown as she glides between the tombstones, the grey-green pallor of Tor Johnson’s zombie makeup, the warm brown earth of freshly dug graves, the dark black of Bela Lugosi’s iconic cape in his final screen appearance, the bright blue uniforms of military personnel investigating the saucer sightings, the shiny metallic interior of the alien spacecraft with its cardboard instrument panels, the warm amber of 1950s domestic interiors where characters deliver exposition, the red and orange of the climactic fire sequence, the cheerful mismatched colors of day-for-night shots, and the vibrant curtain behind the narrator Criswell. Historical Significance

Plan 9 from Outer Space occupies a permanent and irreplaceable position in cinema history as the most celebrated cult film ever made. Crowned ‘Worst Movie Ever Made’ in the 1980 book The Golden Turkey Awards, the film perversely achieved a fame and cultural longevity that most ‘good’ films never approach. Edward D. Wood Jr.’s unwavering sincerity and boundless enthusiasm in the face of microscopic budgets, cardboard sets, and bewildered actors has made him an icon of independent filmmaking and the subject of Tim Burton’s acclaimed 1994 biographical film Ed Wood. The film’s status as Bela Lugosi’s final screen appearance — incorporating footage shot by Wood shortly before the legendary horror star’s death — adds a genuinely poignant dimension to its camp appeal. Plan 9 essentially invented the ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ movie genre and continues to attract devoted new fans with each generation. Through colorization, this one-of-a-kind cinematic phenomenon is preserved for modern audiences.
