Plot Summary

Three inseparable outlaw friends — Jim Hawkins (Fred MacMurray), Wahoo Jones (Jack Oakie), and Sam McGee (Lloyd Nolan) — ride together robbing stagecoaches and banks across the lawless Texas frontier. When a botched robbery goes wrong and the heat from the law intensifies, they decide to split up temporarily. In a twist of fate and fortune, Jim and Wahoo separately decide to join the newly formed Texas Rangers, each seeing it as a perfect cover while the manhunt dies down. Sam, meanwhile, continues his outlaw career and rises to become one of the most feared bandits in the territory.

As Jim and Wahoo immerse themselves in Ranger life under the command of the stern but fair Major Bailey (Edward Ellis), they undergo a genuine transformation. The discipline, purpose, and camaraderie of the Rangers gradually turns them from cynical outlaws into dedicated lawmen who take pride in protecting the frontier settlers from the very kind of criminal they once were. Jim in particular finds his calling in the Rangers and falls in love with Amanda Bailey (Jean Parker), the Major’s daughter, giving him even more reason to leave his criminal past behind.

The inevitable collision comes when Sam McGee and his gang launch a devastating campaign of raids along the border. Jim and Wahoo are assigned to bring their former friend to justice, forcing them to choose between their old loyalty to Sam and their new commitment to the Rangers and the law. The film builds to a powerful climax as the bonds of friendship are tested against the demands of duty, and the three former partners face each other in a showdown that will determine whether the old outlaw code or the new law of the Rangers will prevail on the Texas frontier.
