Plot Summary

Fort Dorado, Arizona Territory. The frontier is threatened by Donat, the brilliant Apache war chief who has united the tribes and is massing his forces for a devastating assault on the white settlements. The only thing preventing catastrophe is a narrow mountain pass — Fort Dorado’s strategic chokepoint — which must be held at all costs until reinforcements arrive.

Captain Richard Lance (Gregory Peck) is the fort’s most capable officer, and also its most unpopular. His rigid discipline, refusal to compromise, and a personal decision that cost a popular officer his life have made him despised by most of the garrison. When he volunteers to lead the suicidal mission to hold the pass, the men assigned to him are the fort’s worst — soldiers with grudges, disciplinary problems, and personal reasons to hate their commander.

Among Lance’s reluctant command are a cavalryman (Gig Young) who blames Lance for the death of his friend and who is also his rival for the affections of Cathy Donat (Barbara Payton), the fort commander’s beautiful daughter. There is the surly, dangerous veteran (Ward Bond) who respects nothing but brute force, and the alcoholic bugler (Lon Chaney Jr.) struggling with his own demons. Each man has a reason to want Lance dead, and the isolation of the mountain pass gives them the opportunity.

Lance must forge this collection of hostile, untrustworthy men into a fighting unit capable of holding the pass against impossible odds. He must earn the respect of men who despise him, maintain discipline among soldiers who would gladly see him killed, and face the Apache assault with a force that is as dangerous to its own commander as it is to the enemy. The film builds inexorably toward a climactic battle that tests every man’s courage and forces the question: what does it mean to follow a leader you hate into a fight you cannot win?

Cast & Crew

Director: Gordon Douglas
Stars: Gregory Peck, Barbara Payton, Gig Young, Ward Bond, Lon Chaney Jr., Neville Brand, Jeff Corey, Warner Anderson

Gregory Peck brings his trademark combination of moral authority and inner conflict to Captain Lance — a man whose competence is unquestionable but whose coldness makes him impossible to love. Peck makes Lance’s isolation palpable; this is a leader who does the right thing at the cost of every human connection. Ward Bond is magnificent as the dangerous, unpredictable veteran. Lon Chaney Jr. brings surprising depth to the troubled bugler. Neville Brand adds menace as another hostile soldier.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

The spectacular Arizona locations — the forbidding mountain pass, the sun-blasted desert, the dusty cavalry fort, the dramatic rock formations where the climactic battle unfolds — are magnificently enhanced through expert colorization. The visual contrast between the harsh desert landscape and the vivid blue eyes of Peck’s determined captain creates striking imagery. The Apache assault sequences gain tremendous visual excitement in colour. Now also available in colour. Own this intense cavalry Western for just €15.00 — where courage is tested at the mountain pass.

Historical Significance

Only the Valiant represents the darker, more psychologically complex strain of Western filmmaking that emerged in the early 1950s, moving beyond simple heroes and villains to explore the moral ambiguities of frontier leadership. Gregory Peck’s Captain Lance anticipates the conflicted Western heroes that would dominate the genre in the following decades. The film’s exploration of a commander despised by his own men — and the question of whether effective leadership requires personal sacrifice that includes being hated — gives it thematic depth unusual for the genre. The outstanding supporting cast, including future stars and character-acting legends, makes this a showcase of 1950s Hollywood talent at its finest. Through colorization, this psychologically rich Western has been preserved for modern audiences in a stunning new presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Movie-Specific Questions

Q: How does Gregory Peck’s performance compare to his other Westerns?
A: This is one of Peck’s grittiest performances. Unlike the more straightforwardly heroic roles in The Big Country or The Gunfighter, Captain Lance is abrasive, isolated, and morally complex — a leader who does what is necessary regardless of the personal cost.

Q: Is the final battle exciting?
A: The climactic Apache assault on the mountain pass is masterfully staged — tense, brutal, and sustained. Director Gordon Douglas builds the tension expertly, making every bullet count and ensuring every character’s fate carries dramatic weight.

Q: Is this similar to other “men on a mission” Westerns?
A: The film has clear parallels to siege Westerns like Fort Apache and anticipates films like The Alamo. Its distinctive contribution is the psychological dimension — the men defending the pass are as dangerous to each other as the enemy outside.
