Plot Summary
Private detective Don Gale (Richard Dix) takes on what seems like a simple, low-paying case — an elderly Swedish shopkeeper named Elmer Donalds, who runs a dusty antique and second-hand record shop, hires Gale to track down a young woman named Elora Lund. Donalds claims he wants to leave the girl a small inheritance before he dies. But when Gale investigates further and discovers that the so-called inheritance actually involves a set of incredibly rare, one-of-a-kind Jenny Lind phonograph recordings — wax cylinder recordings of the legendary Swedish Nightingale herself, worth an absolute fortune to collectors — the detective’s morality crumbles instantly.
Abandoning all pretense of honesty or professional ethics, Gale decides to find both the girl and the recordings for himself, planning to keep the treasure and leave the dying old man with nothing. As Gale ruthlessly manipulates everyone in his path, the web of deceit grows ever more tangled and dangerous. He lies to the trusting young woman (Nina Vale) he was originally hired to help, using her naivety to lead him to the recordings. He outmaneuvers the menacing, slow-witted thug Pontos (Mike Mazurki), a hulking brute also desperate to get his hands on the valuable cylinders. And he must constantly stay one step ahead of the suspicious Detective Taggart (Barton MacLane), a dogged police investigator who senses that Gale is involved in the increasing violence surrounding the case. As bodies begin to pile up and the competition for the priceless recordings intensifies into a lethal game, the mysterious, omniscient Whistler narrator warns from the shadows that Gale’s consuming greed will inevitably be his undoing. This classic movie delivers a dark, tightly plotted mystery with a memorably villainous protagonist.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
This colorized version of Mysterious Intruder reveals the dark city streets, the cluttered antique shops, and the atmospheric noir settings with moody new visual depth. The original black and white cinematography captured the shadowy tension perfectly, but the professionally colorized restoration brings out the dusty, amber-toned interior of the old antique shop crammed with curiosities, the rain-slicked grey city streets and dark alleyways of the urban nightscape, the warm but deceptive lighting of Gale’s office with its cheap furnishings, the dim, smoky interiors of bars and boarding houses, and Mike Mazurki’s imposing physical presence in the shadowed doorways with frame-by-frame precision. The noir atmosphere of shadows, double-crosses, and moral corruption is powerfully enhanced by the muted, atmospheric color palette. Watch this restored classic film in rich, atmospheric color. Historical Significance
Mysterious Intruder is part of Columbia Pictures’ popular Whistler film series, eight films produced between 1944 and 1948, each featuring the mysterious unseen narrator whose omniscient commentary on the characters’ fates became a signature element. Director William Castle, who would later become one of cinema’s most famous showmen with gimmick-driven horror classics like House on Haunted Hill and The Tingler, shows early mastery of suspense, pacing, and atmosphere in this lean, efficient thriller. Richard Dix, in one of his final screen roles, gives one of his most compelling performances as a protagonist who is essentially the villain of his own story — an unusual and daring narrative choice for 1940s cinema. The Jenny Lind recordings MacGuffin adds a fascinating layer of cultural history to the crime plot. The colorization adds atmospheric visual richness to this taut B-movie gem.
