Plot Summary
Jasper Doolittle (Charley Grapewin), a cantankerous old millionaire with a sharp tongue and a deep distrust of his own family, gathers his greedy relatives at his remote hilltop mansion on a dark and stormy night. His announcement shocks them all: he intends to distribute his entire fortune before midnight to avoid a punishing new inheritance tax that takes effect the following day. But the relatives’ glee quickly turns to outrage when Jasper reveals he plans to give the lion’s share — a full million dollars — to his long-lost granddaughter, whom none of them have ever met.
The situation becomes dangerously explosive when two different young women arrive at the mansion, each claiming to be the rightful heir. The first is Doris Waverly (Mary Carlisle), a sweet and seemingly genuine young woman whose story checks out, and the second is a mysterious impostor whose true identity and motives remain shrouded in suspicion. As a violent thunderstorm rages outside, cutting the telephone lines and making the roads impassable, the lights go out repeatedly, secret passages hidden behind bookcases and fireplaces are revealed, and murder strikes without warning. Tom Dean (Wallace Ford), a stranded traveler whose car broke down nearby, stumbles into the chaos and finds himself caught up in the deadly mystery, his quick wits and sardonic humor making him an unlikely hero. With the relatives turning on each other in paranoid fury, servants behaving suspiciously, and a killer lurking in the shadows of the vast house, no one is safe until the truth is finally revealed in a tense and surprising climax. This classic movie is a superb example of the beloved 1930s old dark house thriller, delivering genuine chills alongside sharp humor.

Historical Significance
One Frightened Night is a prime example of the “old dark house” genre that thrived in the 1930s, following in the tradition established by James Whale’s The Old Dark House (1932) and The Cat and the Canary (1927). The genre’s formula — greedy relatives gathered in a spooky mansion for a will reading, with murder and mayhem following — proved irresistible to Depression-era audiences who relished the blend of thrills and dark humor. The film combines genuine chills with comedic moments, featuring a strong ensemble cast that brings each character vividly to life. Charley Grapewin, who would achieve lasting fame four years later as Uncle Henry in The Wizard of Oz (1939), gives a spirited and commanding performance as the eccentric millionaire who takes visible delight in tormenting his grasping relatives. Wallace Ford, a versatile character actor who appeared in everything from Tod Browning’s Freaks (1932) to dozens of westerns and mysteries, brings his trademark everyman resourcefulness and wry humor to the stranded traveler role. Director Christy Cabanne, a veteran filmmaker who had worked with D.W. Griffith, maintains a tight pace and effective atmosphere throughout. The colorization adds striking visual atmosphere to this entertaining thriller, making the gothic mansion setting even more immersive and the stormy night sequences particularly dramatic.
