Plot Summary

London, 1699. Captain William Kidd has successfully reinvented himself. Once a ruthless pirate, he has buried his loot, forged a respectable identity, and ingratiated himself with the English aristocracy. King William III, impressed by Kidd’s apparent seamanship and patriotism, grants him a royal commission to escort a fleet of merchant vessels carrying treasure from Madagascar back to England, protecting them from the very pirates Kidd once commanded.

Kidd assembles a crew of his most trusted cutthroats, including the dangerous Jose Lorenzo (John Carradine) and the brute Orange Doeg (Sheldon Leonard). His plan is breathtakingly simple: hijack the treasure, sink the merchant ships, eliminate every witness, and sail triumphantly into London as the loyal captain who was tragically unable to prevent a pirate attack. The treasure will be his, and so will the King’s grateful rewards.

But Kidd’s carefully constructed scheme begins to unravel when Adam Mercy, a skilled and principled young sailor, joins the crew. Mercy is not what he seems — he has his own secret reasons for being aboard, connected to one of Kidd’s past victims. As the voyage progresses, Mercy gains the trust of the honest sailors and begins to understand Kidd’s murderous intentions.

A deadly game of cat and mouse unfolds across the open ocean, as Kidd attempts to identify and eliminate anyone who might expose him, while Mercy works to gather evidence and protect the innocent. The tension builds toward a spectacular confrontation at sea that will determine whether Kidd’s monstrous scheme succeeds or whether justice will finally catch up with the most cunning pirate on the seven seas.

Historical Significance

Captain Kidd represents the golden age of Hollywood pirate films and features one of the most entertaining villain performances in adventure cinema history. Charles Laughton, who had already played memorable villains in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), brings the real historical figure of William Kidd to life with a complexity that elevates the film above simple swashbuckling entertainment. The film draws loosely on the actual history of Captain Kidd, who was indeed granted a commission by the English crown and was later hanged for piracy in 1701. Rowland V. Lee, a veteran director of adventure films, crafts a taut thriller that balances action, intrigue, and dark humour. Through colorization, this classic of the pirate adventure genre has been preserved for modern audiences.
