Plot Summary

Fedya is a charming but dissolute Russian nobleman who squanders his considerable inheritance on drinking, gambling, and the intoxicating company of gypsy musicians in the taverns and music halls of pre-revolutionary Russia. Despite genuine love for his devoted wife Lisa and their young child, Fedya cannot control the self-destructive impulses that drive him back to the bottle and the card table night after night. His friend Victor watches Fedya’s decline with growing anguish, not least because Victor has been secretly in love with Lisa for years — a love so deeply respectful that he has never spoken of it to anyone.

Racked with guilt over the misery he causes and convinced that his wife and child would be better off without the burden of a husband who brings nothing but shame and debt, Fedya conceives a desperate plan. Rather than simply leaving — which would trap Lisa in a marriage to an absent drunk — he stages a convincing suicide, planting his clothes and belongings at a riverbank so that the world believes he has drowned himself. With Fedya officially dead, Lisa is free to mourn, heal, and eventually accept the sincere proposal of Victor, who will be the devoted husband and father that Fedya could never be.

For years, Fedya disappears into the margins of society, living in wretched poverty among a troupe of gypsy musicians whose wild, soulful music becomes his only source of comfort and connection. He drinks himself deeper into ruin, sustained only by the knowledge that Lisa and his son are now safe and happy.
