Plot Summary
In the magnificent, sun-drenched city of Renaissance Florence, the legendary artist and goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini (Fredric March) blazes through life with the same passion, bravado, and magnificent disregard for convention that he brings to his art. Cellini has arrived at the court of Alessandro de’ Medici, the Duke of Florence (Frank Morgan), ostensibly to create a magnificent golden chalice for his patron, but the roguish artist has already set his sights on a far more dangerous creation — an affair with the Duke’s beautiful, bored, and wickedly intelligent wife, the Duchess (Constance Bennett). The Duchess, trapped in a marriage to a vain, jealous, magnificently pompous husband who is himself conducting a barely concealed dalliance with the fiery young actress Angela (Fay Wray), finds Cellini’s bold, unapologetic pursuit irresistibly attractive and decides to play a romantic game that quickly spirals into glorious, scandalous chaos. What follows is a magnificently witty battle of seductions, jealousies, deceptions, and romantic revenge as Cellini and the Duchess conduct their flirtation under the Duke’s increasingly suspicious nose, while the Duke simultaneously pursues Angela, and Angela schemes to manipulate them all for her own advancement. The entire Medici court becomes a spectacular stage for romantic intrigue, with servants spying, guards being bribed, secret passages being employed, and elaborately orchestrated midnight assignations going hilariously wrong at every turn. Cellini’s artistic genius repeatedly saves him from the Duke’s jealous wrath, as the grateful patron cannot quite bring himself to punish the only man in Florence capable of producing the golden masterpiece he desperately desires. This classic movie delivers one of pre-Code Hollywood’s wittiest, most sophisticated, and most delightfully risqué romantic comedies.

Fredric March is magnificent as Cellini, bringing athletic charisma, roguish charm, and infectious joy to the legendary artist whose romantic audacity is matched only by his supreme creative genius. Constance Bennett delivers a sophisticated, wickedly funny performance as the Duchess, matching March’s energy with elegant wit and a modern sensibility that makes her Renaissance noblewoman feel refreshingly contemporary. Frank Morgan nearly steals the film as the magnificently pompous, perpetually suspicious Duke, creating a comic creation of such inspired absurdity that he would later refine this same bumbling authority into his immortal performance as the Wizard of Oz.

Historical Significance
The Affairs of Cellini represents pre-Code Hollywood comedy at its most sophisticated and daring, featuring bold romantic escapades, witty sexual innuendo, and an unapologetic celebration of passion and pleasure that would become impossible after the strict enforcement of the Production Code later in 1934. Gregory La Cava’s direction brings elegant European sensibility to the material, adapted from Edwin Justus Mayer’s successful Broadway play The Firebrand. The film earned two Academy Award nominations including Best Cinematography, and its glittering ensemble cast delivers performances that exemplify the wit, glamour, and sophistication that made early 1930s Hollywood comedy so distinctive. Through colorization, this landmark pre-Code romantic comedy is preserved for modern audiences.
