Plot Summary

Paris, 1794. Maximilien Robespierre (Richard Basehart) has seized supreme power during the French Revolution and plans to declare himself dictator before the National Convention. He summons François Barras, the only man who can formally nominate him, but Barras refuses and goes into hiding.

Patriot Charles D’Aubigny (Robert Cummings) secretly kills and impersonates Duval, the prosecutor of Strasbourg whom Robespierre has summoned to Paris. Since neither Robespierre nor his sinister chief of secret police, Fouché (Arnold Moss), has ever met Duval, the deception succeeds. Robespierre reveals that his black book — containing the names of everyone he intends to denounce and execute — has been stolen, and gives D’Aubigny 24 hours to find it.

Through his sole contact, the brave Madelon (Arlene Dahl), D’Aubigny locates Barras, but they are followed and Barras is arrested by Saint-Just. D’Aubigny suspects the book was never stolen at all and that Robespierre is using the alleged theft to keep his enemies off balance. Racing against time, D’Aubigny discovers the book hidden in Robespierre’s own office behind a bakery. Fouché attempts to kill him, but D’Aubigny escapes with the evidence. Madelon is captured and tortured, but refuses to reveal D’Aubigny’s location. In a climactic confrontation at the National Convention, Robespierre is denounced, shot through the jaw, and sent to the guillotine. D’Aubigny rescues Madelon from a secret room. Outside, Fouché encounters an unknown army officer who introduces himself as “Bonaparte. Napoleon Bonaparte.”
