Plot Summary
George Radcliffe is a successful American businessman living in London whose comfortable life is built upon a foundation of apparent heroism. Years earlier, Radcliffe was the key prosecution witness in a murder trial โ his testimony helped convict a colleague for the brutal killing of their employer during what appeared to be a robbery. The case also resulted in a large sum of missing money, and Radcliffe subsequently prospered in business, rising to wealth and social prominence.
His wife Martha has always been completely confident in her husband’s integrity and in the truth of his testimony. Their marriage appears solid, built on mutual love and respect. But when an anonymous letter arrives suggesting that George himself was the real killer and that his testimony was a web of calculated lies designed to frame an innocent man, Martha’s world begins to crack at the foundations.
At first, Martha dismisses the accusation as the work of a crank. But small details begin to nag at her โ inconsistencies in George’s account that she had never noticed before, financial matters that don’t quite add up, reactions from her husband that seem defensive rather than innocent. As she quietly begins to investigate on her own, each new piece of evidence seems to confirm the terrible possibility that the man she married is not who she believed him to be.
The tension mounts relentlessly as Martha finds herself trapped between her love for George and her growing horror at what he may have done. She cannot confide in anyone without destroying her husband, yet she cannot live with the uncertainty of not knowing the truth, ultimately building to a devastating climax where all deceptions must finally be revealed.

Historical Significance
The Naked Edge holds a poignant place in cinema history as the final film of Gary Cooper, one of Hollywood’s most iconic stars, who passed away shortly after its completion. Cooper was gravely ill during filming, though his condition was not publicly known, lending an unintentional poignancy to his performance. The film was directed by Michael Anderson, known for Around the World in 80 Days and The Dam Busters. The production reunited the Hitchcockian tradition of the domestic thriller with a stellar cast, and Peter Cushing’s supporting role adds to its distinction. Through colorization, Gary Cooper’s final screen performance is preserved for modern audiences in a new and vivid format.
