Plot Summary

Michael Dowd (Ronald Colman) is a debonair and witty thief whose elegance and charm have made him a legend in the Parisian underworld. When his luck finally runs out and he is caught, the French courts hand down the ultimate punishment for a career criminal — deportation to the penal colony on Devil’s Island, the isolated prison off the coast of French Guiana from which escape is considered impossible.

Arriving at the brutal tropical prison, Dowd finds a world of crushing heat, backbreaking labor, tropical disease, and the constant cruelty of guards who enforce discipline through violence and deprivation. Despite these conditions, Dowd’s intelligence and natural charm set him apart from the other wretched prisoners, and he catches the attention of the prison commandant, Doyle (Louis Wolheim), a brutish martinet who rules the colony with an iron fist.

Doyle assigns Dowd to serve as a household servant in his residence — a seemingly privileged position that puts the charming prisoner in daily contact with Madame Doyle (Ann Harding), the warden’s beautiful and desperately unhappy wife. Madame Doyle is trapped in a loveless marriage to a cruel and neglectful husband, and her isolation in this hellish tropical outpost has left her emotionally starving.

The inevitable happens — Michael and Madame Doyle fall passionately in love, conducting a dangerous affair under the nose of the jealous and violent warden. Their romance provides both of them with a reason to live, but it also puts them in mortal danger. When the warden begins to suspect the truth, Michael must use all his cunning and courage to plan an escape that will save both himself and the woman he loves from the wrath of a man who has the power of life and death over everyone on the island.
